Date Published:
Newly arrived Cabo neurologist, Dr.Gabriela Santos, brings a warm and friendly attitude to a profession dedicated to the treatment of people suffering from migraines, epilepsy, and Parkinson Disease. The young, attractive doctor, opened her practice eight months ago, in the centralized offices of the AmeriMed building next to McDonald's and across the street from the highly visible Oxxo and Pemex gas station. Dr. Santos is a graduate of UNAM University at Nuevo Leon with a specialty degree in Internal Medicine. She accomplished her graduate work in Texas at Metropolitan Hospital and began practicing clinical neurology three years ago in Monterrey, Mexico's, San Jose Hospital TEC; the city where she was born and raised. Later obtaining her Masters Degree in neuroimmunology and working overseas at the Multiple Sclerosis Center in Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain from March 2009 to September 2010. ''We have a doctor that is a friend of my husband's from our time in college, who has been living here three years. He told us about the city and that started us on the idea to relocate and when we came here to visit, we loved it and moved here immediately.'' said a smiling Dr. Gabriela, when discussing her transition from Monterrey to Los Cabos. ''Not a lot of people know about us yet, but word of mouth is helping to change that.'' Dr. Gabriela Santos Quintana is a specialist in the treatment of neurological diseases such as headaches, migraines, seizures, strokes, dementia, Parkinson Disease, multiple sclerosis, tremors, neuropathy and myasthenia gravis. Her degrees in internal medicine were the pursuit of a life long ambition. ''I have always been interested in everything about the brain, so I chose neurology as my profession,'' commented the bilingual, Mrs. Santos Quintana. ''Most of the people that are middle aged who come in to see me are suffering from migraine headaches and multiple sclerosis. They arrive looking for something to ease their pain. A lot of my patients live here and some are with cruise ships or staying at any one of the hotels in Cabo. A lot of them find me on the internet. Older people come in suffering from Parkinson Disease or a stroke.'' added Dr. Santos. The charmingly delightful, Dr. Gabriela Santos had been in private practice for 3 years in Monterrey along with her dermatologist husband, Humberto A. Cantu Garza, before moving to San Lucas. The pair met in medical school and have been happily married ever since. ''We are trying to increase our practice by seeing more patients, but we understand that August and September are slow months here in Cabo. On Wednesdays, we go out to San Jose del Cabo, because some patients have a difficult time trying to get here.'' noted Gabriela. Since arriving in San Lucas during July, 2012, Dr. Santos has generated the patient's she cares for through facebook, twitter and her blog. ''When we were in Monterrey, Mexico, all of these worked for us. I try and put as much information that a patient might need in the blog, because sometimes people will not know what a neurologist does. People as far away as Argentina are able to read symptoms and treatment and seek professional help in their area,'' she added.
